IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MOODY HUES.

current design vibe: Dark Academia

It only takes a quick Pinterest search to pull up several images of moody, dark interiors filled with art, literary works and other eccentric items. On the surface, the trend seems to be a combination of Harry Potter meets The Dead Poet’s Society prep school look, but on a more sophisticated level. Let’s explore a little further to see why this trend has taken hold.

The moody hues are the most distinct characterization of the decor. Saturated jewel colors are covering not only the walls, but the ceilings of paneled rooms. A library or fireplace is usually the main focus surrounded by fine furniture with rich fabrics and intricate wallpaper. A library of books, scientific specimens and gallery walls highlight the academic component. All combined, it’s a modern celebration of traditional and European classicism.

Society is again embracing the traditional philosophy of following old-world principles of beauty and recognized standards of craftsmanship. Essentially, what is old is now new. Everyone inherently recognizes beauty and appreciates it, whether it’s architecture, art or literature. Looking at our world today, with the rise of cheap direct-ship furniture and ugly buildings, people are longing for beauty and sustainability. So, as individuals yearn for meaningful connections, it seems logical that well-made items and colors with more depth are more in vogue.

Throughout my own community, I’m seeing home exteriors being painted deep colors like charcoal grey. They are stunning and, since homes are painted every seven to ten years, this trend is here for awhile. I’ve even seen some spin-off trends of dark academia, but, that’s for another post.
